LOST A HOME TO GET A SHELTER

To comprehend calm, one must know chaos. To perceive light, one must know darkness. To harness peace, one must know war. War between nations is a public debacle. Every move is scrutinized. Every rumor is proclaimed as Intel. Every statement is politicized. As we constantly debate the brewing wars, in hope that we will be able to neutralize them before the bloodshed engulfs us whole, we often ignore a war closer to home.

Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are perhaps the most unfortunate and impoverished group of Palestinian refugees in one of the Arab host country. They are being deprived of their civil rights and subjected to various types of marginalisation, which often linked to exclusion and violence. However, the experience of many infinite peace efforts has shown that without solving the problem of the Palestinian refugees, an agreement cannot be reached.

Despite their enduring refuge in Lebanon, Palestinian refugees lack a separate legal status that differentiate them from ‘foreigners’, and grant them the basic human rights. Having been abandoned and neglected by the peace process makers, Palestinian refugees are attempting to accommodate in the isolation. They perceive these rights as a strategy for survival in the middle of desperate situations of war.

The agitated history of Palestinians in Lebanon has played a crucial role in directing their present identity and shaping their perspectives towards the peace process. Palestinians in Lebanon probably face the most insecure fate relative to other Palestinian refugees anywhere in the world. Israel’s recognition of the right of return would fulfil a demand that has become a fundamental element in Palestinian national identity. Only if the fundamental concerns of Lebanon and Israel, which would centralize on the issue of the right of return for the Palestinian refugees in the former, are met then the road towards settlement between them will be opened and a political outcome of great moral value would be achieved, averting the dangers of war and violence.
